SPORTS VISION

Sports vision testing helps athletes understand how effectively their eyes function during fast-paced, high-demand activities. Unlike a standard eye exam that focuses mainly on clarity of sight, sports vision evaluations dig deeper into the skills that influence athletic success. These specialized tests are essential for improving visual performance, reaction time, and overall coordination.

Sports vision testing can be tailored to the needs of each athlete, but most evaluations assess critical skills such as hand-eye coordination, eye tracking, depth perception, and visual processing speed. If you're an athlete in the Baton Rouge area looking to elevate your game, Dr. Duong can help.

How Sports Vision Training Improves Performance

Dr. Duong offers several types of assessments designed to measure the visual skills needed in competitive sports:

Visual Acuity Testing

This begins with a standard Snellen eye chart, where letters decrease in size line by line. Reading the 20/20 line accurately indicates average clarity of vision, while reading smaller lines may indicate sharper-than-average vision, such as 20/15. Although basic, this test is foundational for identifying refractive errors that may limit performance without the athlete realizing it.

Refractive errors—such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism—affect how light focuses on the retina. Correcting these issues, whether with glasses, contacts, or vision correction procedures like LASIK, can dramatically improve an athlete’s ability to track moving targets and react quickly.

Contrast Sensitivity Testing

Contrast sensitivity measures how well you can distinguish objects from their backgrounds, especially when lighting is dim or colors are similar. During this test, you view gray stripes against changing backgrounds that gradually match in tone. Poor contrast sensitivity can make it harder to spot balls, opponents, or obstacles.

Depending on the results, solutions such as specialized lens tints or updated prescriptions may help enhance visual clarity in challenging environments.

Eye Alignment and Teamwork Exams

Tests such as the Hirschberg evaluation check how well your eyes align and coordinate. By analyzing how light reflects on each cornea, Dr. Duong can identify potential alignment issues. Eye dominance testing is also performed to determine which eye takes the lead when focusing on moving targets.

If one eye consistently loses focus or alignment too early, you may have binocularity issues—meaning the eyes struggle to work together, affecting depth perception and coordination.

Train Your Eyes Like You Train Your Body

Athletic excellence isn’t just about strength and conditioning; it also requires quick, accurate visual processing and refined hand-eye coordination. Sports vision training addresses these skills directly, helping athletes react faster, judge distances more accurately, and improve overall performance.
